Sarah Verardo, a North Carolina mom of three, shared an emotional look into how she describes the effects of her military husband's traumatic brain injury, or TBI, to her young daughters. Recently, she explained to her 7-year-old why she doesn't go on dates with her husband, Sgt. Michael Verardo, who was catastrophically wounded when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan in 2010. “I often tell the girls, 'Dad has a sleepy brain — it seems like his brain and body keep changing, but he still has the same heart,'” she told Today.com. As part of TBI Awareness Month, Verardo shared what their daily life is like and how her daughters have dealt with ignorant comments about their father from others. Read the full story here
Today (και με φαγητό) 32 Al Roker is getting back in shape with 'fitness snacking.'
Al Roker explained yesterday that one of his knees "is shot," which has hindered his normal walking routine, yet he still finished with more than 13,000 steps a day earlier. How did the TODAY weatherman do it without being able to take a long walk? Al said he was able to still get his steps in by using a treadmill in his TODAY dressing room as well as the NBC fitness center. His strategy of small bursts of movement throughout the day, also known as "exercise snacking," can be a powerful antidote to the health impacts of sitting for hours a day at your work desk. Here's what a recent study says about the effectiveness of short spurts of exercise.

Last month, Janet Kelly and her fiancé, DaQuan Davis, were shopping for groceries when Davis' brother, Demetrius, frantically called to say their rental home in Detroit was engulfed in flames. Kelly's young daughters began to cry, thinking their little sisters, Isabella, 4, and Shantel, 1, didn't make it out of the house. Less than a half hour later, they learned the family's pit bull mix, Blue, came to the rescue to help save Shantel. "Demetrius was able to get Isabella out, but Shantel was pinned in her playpen," Kelly told Today.com. "Blue followed Demetrius outside, then he ran back into the house for Shantel. He was protecting her no matter what." The hero dog alerted firefighters to Shantel's location by circling around her and barking. The family is struggling after losing everything in the fire, but they are making sure to give Blue extra belly rubs. "He's the sweetest dog," Kelly said.
