Τhe Internet Archive is committed to protecting libraries' rights to own, lend, and preserve books. However, our Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) program, which preserves traditional library lending in the digital world, is under threat from a lawsuit filed by four major publishing companies. This is harmful both to libraries and the entire preservation ecosystem.

CDL ensures that communities have access to critical resources and cultural artifacts, and that students everywhere have access to books. Each book loaned via CDL has already been purchased by the libraries, so authors and publishers have been fully compensated for those books. Libraries must be able to continue their vital role in society—by owning, preserving, and lending books. We're asking for help in defending libraries' rights to serve patrons online.
