Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson, a low-ranking member of the GOP leadership team, became the party's latest nominee for the vacant speaker of the House position yesterday. He was nominated just hours after Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer dropped his bid. Emmer failed to secure the near-unanimous GOP support needed on the House floor and was denounced on social media by former President Donald Trump. It remains unclear whether Johnson can get the 217 Republican votes needed to win the gavel. A floor vote could happen as soon as this afternoon.
