First Republic Bank is taken over by the FDIC and sold in the 3rd major bank failure of 2023.
First Republic Bank has become the third major bank to go under in less than two months after being taken over by federal regulators and sold to JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in America. The FDIC announced this morning that it has seized First Republic, and that JP Morgan will be purchasing substantially all of the bank's assets and deposits. First Republic ($229.1 billion in assets) eclipsed Silicon Valley Bank as the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history. The move comes days after the bank reported losing about 40% of its deposits in the first quarter this year when customers pulled their money out and moved it to banks seen as safer and offering better returns. About 70% of First Republic's deposits were uninsured, meaning they were larger than the FDIC's $250,000 guaranteed limit. Here's the latest.

A man suspected of using an AR-15 rifle to kill several of his neighbors appears to have slipped past a 2-mile dragnet of more than 150 law enforcement officers outside Houston. Francisco Oropesa, 38, is suspected of opening fire on a house full of adults and kids on Friday, killing five people, including a 9-year-old boy, after one complained that gunshots coming from his property were keeping a baby from sleeping, police said. Authorities said that Oropesa may have been drunk before the attack, and police acknowledged previous reports of gunfire on his property. Law enforcement officials said they have been in contact with Oropesa's wife but are "running into dead ends." Here's the latest.

Jack is back! Legendary actor and diehard Los Angeles Lakers fan Jack Nicholson, 86, made a rare public appearance over the weekend at the Lakers' 40-point rout of the visiting Memphis Grizzlies. It was the first time Jack was seen courtside at a Lakers game since 2021, and it came as Los Angeles won their first-round playoff series to advance to the Western Conference semifinals. The three-time Oscar winner attended the game with his son, Ray, and grandson, Duke. He was seen mingling with "Curb Your Enthusiasm" star Larry David and sharing a quick pregame exchange with Lakers superstar LeBron James. Nicholson has been a Lakers season ticket holder since 1970.
