Death toll soars past 5,000 as rescue efforts continue after earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Search and rescue efforts are continuing today as the death toll steadily climbs from yesterday's devastating earthquakes in southeastern Turkey near the border with Syria. At least 3,419 people were dead in Turkey and more than 1,500 in Syria, according to officials. Thousands more have been injured and many others are buried under rubble. About 23 million people have been affected by the quakes, the World Health Organization said. Aid and relief teams have been deployed to the area from multiple countries, including members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Here's the latest.

Brittany Williams nearly died at 24 when she went into cardiac arrest nine years ago in a restaurant in New York City's Times Square. She is sharing her story to highlight the importance of CPR training and how ignoring symptoms can potentially have life-threatening consequences. A week before her cardiac arrest, she was at work when the left side of her body "went numb and tingly." Her boss brushed off her concerns, pointing out her age and healthy lifestyle habits. Three days later, Brittany collapsed while having a meal with her parents. "Heart disease affects young people, old people, thin, healthy runners.
