Authorities said the 43-year-old suspected shooter is dead and was unaffiliated with the university. A gunman killed three people and injured five others at Michigan State University on Monday evening, police said. The suspect opened fire at two locations across the East Lansing campus and fled the scene, leading to a manhunt. Officers later found the suspect dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the Michigan State University Police, described the suspect as a 43-year-old man with no affiliation with the university. "We have no idea why he came to campus to do this tonight," Rozman said. Read the latest updates here.

Dead fish and chickens: After a hazardous train derailment, authorities say it's safe to return. Residents aren't buying it.

Residents in the area around East Palestine, Ohio, are sounding the alarm as fish and chickens started suddenly dying after a 150-car train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed on Feb. 3. To avoid an explosion, officials planned a controlled chemical release and burned several train cars carrying vinyl chloride, a flammable gas. Authorities have said it is safe for residents to return home, but people living in the area have reported persistent coughs. Others are only drinking bottled water after the Ohio Department of Natural Resources said the chemical spill had killed about 3,500 small fish in the area. "Don’t tell me it’s safe. Something is going on if the fish are floating in the creek," Cathey Reese, who lives in Negley, Ohio, told an NBC affiliate last week.
