Air quality advisories were in effect for up to 100 million people in the U.S. yesterday, ranging from the Midwest and Texas up to the Northeast, driven by smoke from wildfires raging in eastern Canada. More smoke is expected today in New York City and NYC Public Schools canceled all outdoor activities because of the air quality alert. The toxic plume is coming from wildfires in Quebec and Nova Scotia, and eerie photos showed the haze shrouding buildings in Manhattan. As of early this morning, NYC ranked second and Detroit third among major cities for the worst air quality in the world. Some 414 fires were burning in Canada last night, including 239 considered "out of control," officials said. Poor air quality is predicted from D.C. to South Carolina today, and people are urged to stay indoors, keep windows closed and wear masks outside. Here's the latest
A father and son were killed, and 5 others injured, in a shooting at a high school graduation at Virginia Commonwealth University.
An 18-year-old who just graduated high school and his father were killed and five others were injured in a shooting yesterday after a high school graduation ceremony on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, police said. A 19-year-old man suspected of the shooting was taken into custody. Authorities believe he knew at least one of the victims. Police had not yet released the names of the victims as of early Wednesday. The five injured — all male — were ages 14 to 58. The shooting took place at Monroe Park on VCU's campus after Huguenot High School's graduation at a theater adjacent to the park. "Children were involved here, at a graduation," Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney said. "This is tragic but also traumatic. Because this is their graduation day." Here's the latest
What's for dinner? 32 Is it OK for a child to get a piece of cake at a birthday she wasn't invited to? A mom's story sparks debate.
Let her eat cake? A mom's complaint about an incident involving her 3-year-old daughter and child's birthday at a park has raised a debate about party etiquette in public places. TikToker Kat Stickler said that her daughter, Mary-Katherine, made friends with a group of kids at a birthday party at their neighborhood park in Florida. Stickler said when cake time arrived, her daughter lined up for a slice but was denied by the child's mother, who told her, "This is not your birthday party." Stickler was angry but wondered in a TikTok video if she was overreacting, and comments poured in on both sides. See what a youth development expert and other parents had to say

What's for dinner? Dylan-dreyer-zz-230606-01-092ee3
Dylan Dreyer has brought new meaning to "shaking it off" when her kids get too loud. The TODAY meteorologist conducted a "masterclass" in silencing rowdy children by demonstrating how she vigorously works a cocktail shaker while her 6-year-old son, Calvin, repeatedly yells "MOM!" in the kitchen. “I can’t hear you because I’m shaking my drink,” Dylan sings back at Calvin. The video posted on Instagram by Dylan's husband, Brian Fichera, has been viewed more than a million times. "Here’s the thing: Some people might not love the idea of drinking around your kids and to those people I say 'don’t judge!'" Dylan told TODAY.com. "I’ve got three boys who love being loud and love loud noises, so what better way to get the noise party started than with a cocktail shaker!" See the video here
