In a striking acknowledgment of the need to address the migrant influx at the southern border, the Biden administration announced yesterday that it waived 26 federal laws to allow more border wall construction in southern Texas. The announcement came as Democratic leaders in multiple cities and states have called on Biden to take action to address the crisis. The construction will use federal funds appropriated in 2019 to build a border wall in a 17-mile section of Starr County. It marks a major policy reversal for Biden, who vowed during his 2020 campaign that not “another foot of wall” would be constructed. In response, former President Donald Trump, a strong proponent of building a wall on the southern border, accused Biden of breaking “every environmental law in the book to prove that I was right."
