Combining Research with Libraries This month the Internet Archive hosted its annual celebration, celebrating its mission of "Universal Access to All Knowledge" and highlighting several innovative projects. Founder and Digital Librarian Brewster Kahle spoke on the importance of libraries amid attempts to ban books and defund public resources. San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan was awarded the 2023 Internet Archive Hero Award for her support of digital rights and access to information. The advancement of AI was also discussed, including machine learning models for automated digitization and metadata extraction, underlining AI's role in content generation and community-driven knowledge sharing. Testimonials were given on how Internet Archive aids research, fact-checking, and language translation. The entire program was recorded and is available to watch below:
A Decade of Emulation at the Internet Archive Ten years ago, the Internet Archive introduced the ability to emulate retro software within a web browser. Since then, 250,000 emulated software pieces have lived in the Archive—an achievement reflecting the evolution of emulation technology, starting with JavaScript and advancing to complex programs via Emscripten. The project, involving over a thousand hours of volunteer work, led to millions of visitors exploring old software and games, as well as the creation of specialized collections that offer a window into computer and software history. As it marks its ten-year milestone, the Internet Archive plans to expand its collection and preserve historical software for future generations. A blog on this achievement highlights contributors and showcases the Emularity framework, making running various emulators on archive.org possible. Notable additions include Hypercard Stacks, classic electronic handheld games, and calculators.
