HATE ON THE RISE
European Jews are afraid following a spike in anti-Semitic attacks sparked by the Israel-Hamas war despite authorities increasing protection, Rabbi Menachem Margolin, the chairman of the European Jewish Association, has warned. “People see in the street that they get much more remarks, many more bad looks, hatred, looks and call for death and physical incitement,” Margolin told us in an interview. And for those looking to enrich their perspectives, Euronews Culture selects eight movies to better understand the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
LONE WOLVES
Last week, Abdesalem Lassoued plunged the city of Brussels into chaos. Not even his wife or his closest friends knew that the Tunisian, who was in Belgium illegally, was about to commit an act of terrorism and kill two Swedish nationals. Hours after the attack, Islamic State claimed that Lassoued was a “fighter” for the terrorist group. However, local authorities suggested that he had acted alone. So who is recruiting and radicalising these lone wolves? Laura Llach investigates.
SEARCH FOR JUSTICE
How can Ukrainians claim compensation for the enormous havoc unleashed by Russia’s aggression? The Council of Europe, the Strasbourg-based human rights organisation, has set up a “Register of Damages” to catalogue evidence and allow victims to submit their claims. “We hope that it will be fully operational by the first quarter of next year,” its secretary general, Marija Pejčinović Burić, told our colleague Mared Gwyn Jones. Learn more about the register.
EUROPE’S ALTERNATIVE
Ursula von der Leyen hosted over 40 leaders and ministers of partner countries in Brussels to promote the Global Gateway, the EU’s €300-billion infrastructure project that aims to compete with China’s Belt and Road Initiative. “Global Gateway is about giving countries a choice, and a better choice,” the European Commission president said. Here's what went down in the kick-off event.
TUSK IS BACK
In his first trip to Brussels since the elections, Donald Tusk, the leader of the Polish opposition, began laying the groundwork for his likely comeback as prime minister, with an eye on the €35-billion in recovery funds that his country is yet to unlock. Meanwhile, Euronews Green speaks with the climate activists who played a major role in ending eight years of hard-right governments.
