At 57, a Mother's Day bet led to my first tattoo.

Melania Murphy never wanted a tattoo, but when her three children got shamrocks in honor of their father's Irish heritage, she was admittedly jealous. She made a bet with them that if they could find a symbol of her German roots, she would get a tattoo with them for Mother's Day. They decided on a cornflower, the German national flower, and the pain was worth it for Murphy. "(It's) something I can look at when I miss them, and that’s the best Mother’s Day gift I could ever receive," she says.
