Hollywood's most famous faces are ready to add star power to the picket line in the SAG-AFTRA strike. The World Health Organization's cancer research group said yesterday that it was categorizing aspartame, a common artificial sweetener found in Diet Coke and other sugar-free foods, as a possible carcinogen, meaning there's some evidence it may cause cancer. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration disagreed with that categorization, saying its scientists "do not have safety concerns when aspartame is used under the approved conditions." The WHO is not calling for companies to pull aspartame products like Equal and Nutrasweet from shelves or for consumers to avoid it altogether. In fact, the organization said aspartame is safe for consumption under the recommended limit, which is the equivalent of drinking nine to 14 cans of diet soda per day. | Lisa Marie Presley's tragic death at 54 in January was due to a small bowel obstruction, according to a report by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner obtained by NBC News yesterday. Her cause of death was from a "sequelae," or aftereffect, of the bowel obstruction. The report said the obstruction arose from adhesions that Presley developed following bariatric surgery that she underwent years earlier. "This is a known long-term complication of this type of surgery," the report reads. Presley had complained about abdominal pain in the months before her death, and she was found unresponsive at her home the morning before, according to the autopsy report. Authorities previously confirmed Presley had experienced cardiac arrest. Read more here. |

Author Shawn Warner, 58, was sitting glumly behind stacks of his debut novel at a grocery store book signing in Texas when Jerrad "Red" Swearengin walked by. "When I saw him and I didn't see a smile on his face, it just made me want to change it," Swearengin said on TODAY. Swearengin, a TikTok star who goes by @internetfamouslol, shared a video of his chat with Warner, and the avid readers of #BookTok did the rest. Swearengin's video got more than 18 million views, and Warner's novel, "Leigh Howard and the Ghosts of Simmons-Pierce Manor," rocketed to No. 1 on Amazon's bestseller list, earning gleaming reviews from readers.
