The Latest
An Alabama woman vanished after calling 911 about a toddler walking on a highway. She's been found, but questions remain about what happened.
Investigators are trying to get to the bottom of a mysterious 48-hour period in which an Alabama woman called police to report a toddler walking on an interstate highway, then disappeared, then was found days later. Carlee Russell, 25, called 911 on July 13 about a child walking on a highway and reportedly stopped to help, police said. When officers arrived, they located her vehicle running and many of her personal belongings, but saw no sign of her or any child. Video footage showed a vehicle driving slowly with its flashers on before Russell vanished. She returned home alone and on foot on July 15 and "was not in a good state," her parents told NBC News in an exclusive interview. They said there were moments she "physically had to fight for life" and that they "absolutely" believe an abductor is still out there. Police say they had no reports of a missing child, and are following up on information she provided. Here's the very latest.
Jill Martin revealed that she has breast cancer: 'I am devastated — and empowered at the same time.'

TODAY contributor Jill Martin shared in an emotional essay for TODAY.com that she was told by doctors on June 26 that she has breast cancer. Jill, 47, said she will undergo a double mastectomy this week with more treatment to follow.  "I am heartbroken for so many reasons, but mostly watching my parents watch me go through this," she wrote. "I am devastated and empowered, all at the same time." She wrote that her grandmother died from breast cancer, and her mother had a double mastectomy in her late 40s. Jill underwent genetic testing as a precautionary measure, and she said it saved her life by leading to her diagnosis. Read more here and see her emotional interview with Hoda and Savannah.
What's for dinner? 32 A woman sparked a debate after refusing to give up her window seat to a mom and two kids.
A TikTok user named Tammy Nelson has jumpstarted a debate about plane etiquette after a recent situation where a mom asked her to give up her seat. Nelson said she arrived on the plane to find the woman sitting in her window seat with her two children next to her. When Nelson pointed out the error, the woman asked Nelson to take her assigned seat in a different row. Nelson said she agreed to switch, but only if it was another window seat. When it turned out to be a middle seat, she declined. Nelson said the mom “proceeded to complain for at least 15 minutes to the person next to her loud enough for me to hear. But the woman actually defended me — several times.” What would you have done? Take our poll here.

A simple scratch on the leg in 2019 led Eric Power to a frightening diagnosis that provided the spark for his 200-pound weight loss. After the scratch failed to heal, Power found out from doctors that he had uncontrolled diabetes. He had reached a peak weight of 435 pounds, so he switched to a low-carb and low-calorie diet, intermittent fasting and a walking routine to transform his life. The father of three shared 4 weight-loss tips with us, starting with giving the process four to six weeks to really force a change in habits. He also used our Start TODAY Facebook group for support and positivity on his journey. “I think one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is that you have to put yourself first,” he told us. The "miracle of life" was more like a live-action horror movie to this Arkansas dad. Brett Sills' facial expressions were priceless when his girlfriend of six years, Amanda Roelofs, gave birth to their daughter, Brynlee, earlier this month. In photos taken by a technician right before Roelofs started pushing, Sills reacted like Sigourney Weaver watching a xenomorph hatch in "Aliens." "I was skimming through the photos and I started cracking up," Roelofs told TODAY.com. She shared the hilarious photos on Facebook, where people couldn't get enough of Sills' grossed-out reactions. “I was just looking at her head! It went from being baseball size to a freaking cantaloupe,” Sills told us. See more of his reactions here
